Overview
Located at the southern end of Islesboro, Dark Harbor is the village best known of Islesboro's historic summer communities. With its stunning turn-of-the-century architecture, incredible scenic beauty, and social cachet, Dark Harbor has long been a highly-sought after summer destination and its grand summer "cottages" are the signature homes of these Maine oceanfront properties. These waterfront estates--many of which were built by prominent Boston, New York and Philadelphia families at the beginning of the 20th century--are rarely sold on the open market. When they are, they command some of the highest values in the Mid-Coast region.
Islesboro is an island located three miles off the coast in Maine's Penobscot Bay. The island is readily accessed by public car ferry Maine State Ferry Service (ferries to Islesboro, North Haven, Vinalhaven, and other islands), a 20-minute ride that runs nine times a day in the summer, or by private aircraft landing on the island's 2400 foot airstrip.
The island was incorporated in 1789 and through the 1800s was home to the largest commercial shipping fleet in the bay. Its renowned "Gilded Age" summer resort community developed at the turn of the twentieth century. Today Islesboro's low-key summer population is composed of residents from around the world who appreciate the island's beauty, privacy, and relaxed atmosphere. At about fourteen miles in length, the narrow island includes the villages of Pripet and Islesboro, as well as Dark Harbor. Located in some of the world's best cruising grounds, the island offers public and private boating facilities, along with tennis courts and a private golf course, part of the Tarratine Club.
