Overview
Owls Head is a small town on a peninsula south of Rockland. Originally part of Thomaston, and later South Thomaston, Owls Head was itself incorporated in1921. The small (population ~1600) town is best known for its beautiful lighthouse high on a promontory overlooking Rockland Harbor. The keeper's house is occupied by a Coast Guard family, but Owls Head Light is a state park and a lovely picnic spot. The Owls Head Transportation Museum, which offers ongoing exhibits of exceptional quality as well as special events, also draws visitors to the town. The beaches and wooded trails at Birch Point State Park and Lucia Beach are popular destinations for beachgoers, hikers, and cross-country skiers. The Knox Regional Airport, which offers commercial flights to Boston, is also located in Owls Head.
The lobster boats moored in the town's picturesque harbor attest to the fact that lobstering and fishing are still an important part of Owls Head's local economy and culture.
Several small summer communities have developed over the years in Owls Head. Perhaps the best known is Ash Point, characterized by Maine waterfront properties with beautiful views and secluded summer cottages in the woods. Throughout the town, historic farmhouses and quaint old Capes mix with Shingle-style cottages and understated newer houses. The peninsula's rocky shore offers miles of exploration, with beautiful granite ledges , tidal pools, and cobblestone and sandy beaches. Waterfront real estate here benefits from spectacular views of sheltered coves, scenic harbors, the Camden Hills to the north, the islands of Penobscot Bay, and out to open ocean.
Owls Head students attend school at Gilford Butler School (grades K-2), Owls Head Central School (grades 2-5), Rockland District Middle School (grades 6-8) and Rockland District High School.
